“We had graveside services on Saturday and the requested final date had already been engraved on the stone…. You folks are amazing.  A number of people came up to me to ask how I had been able to do that so quickly (they all had stories of slow stonecutters), and I said I have friends in high places!
Several also commented on the quality of the match between her stone and her husband’s. As I said before, we are so pleased we decided to go with Lloyd Brothers Walker Co. in this matter.  You deliver!”

Frog Mosaic...

Do you know what The Lloyd Brothers Walker Monument Company and the familiar frog mosaic in the Lucas County Courthouse floor have in common?  If you guessed the Lloyd Brothers Co. placed it there, you are correct.

Lloyd Brothers Walker Co. has a remarkable historic background that extends well beyond one of Toledo’s favorite frogs…

Edward Lloyd, who was a trained stone cutter, came from England in 1842 and was among those engaged in cutting stones for the locks, an ambitious waterway project known as the Erie Canal.

Once his work completed, Lloyd settled here in the Toledo area and employed his sense of artistry and craftsmanship by making grave stones and the company was formed.  Founded in 1846, this monument company is the area’s second oldest business, first located in Maumee then moved to Adams and 11th Street providing early tombstones and decorative details for many structures in Toledo.

Lloyd’s three sons; Edward Jr., Oliver, and John carried on the business of carving and building memorials.  The company would earn international recognition and for a time grew to include locations in New York on Fifth Ave., Washington DC, and Detroit.  Records further indicate locations in Pioneer and Delphos, Ohio.  It has been noted that a fire destroyed earliest records that existed.  Jamie Walker joined the company in 1949 and would later become owner until his passing in1999.  The Lloyd Brothers Walker Monument Company has been owned and operated by Mary Wittman since 2006.

The building that once stood at Central and Auburn Avenues across from Historic Woodlawn Cemetery was built in 1892 where thousands of significant records were once housed. The landmark building was vacated after 2000 and demolished by the city of Toledo in 2007. Many of the historic records were preserved by the Toledo Public Library prior to demolition.

Linking together three centuries of generations and events by providing historic landmarks, mausoleums, and prestigious monuments, examples of Lloyd’s work and artisans that followed, are woven into the landscape of nearly every cemetery in Toledo as well as several others both near and far.

Among some of the better known Ohio monuments is that which commemorates the Battle of Fort Meigs in Perrysburg, and honors Presidents McKinley in Toledo and Hayes, in Fremont.  Another well-known example of fine artisanship is a stately monument located in Historic Woodlawn Cemetery in Toledo.  The Ludwig monument, 1900, commissioned by oilman Leroy Ludwig, was constructed of 13 pieces of granite from Barre Vermont, weighing 369,000 pounds was transported on specially laid tracks. Designed as a small scale adaptation of London’s Prince Albert Memorial, it stands 57 feet tall and features an exquisitely sculpted chair within its spire and was erected through the use of block and tackle and winches.  Many other extraordinary monumental works can be seen in this cemetery.

In addition, there are commemorative monuments, mostly east of the Mississippi which include; General Stonewall Jackson at Richmond and Charlottesville, VA, General Robert E. Lee, Lewis and Clark memorials at Charlottesville, Booker T. Washington in Tuskegee, AL, and the Zero Milestone behind the White House marking the geographic center of the district of Columbia’s original10-mile square.  Other commissioned works extend beyond the United States of America; as far away as Ireland, India, Australia, and Africa.

The tradition of historic Lloyd Brothers Walker Monument Co. (LBW) and its commitment to excellence remains strong today.  Our adherence to high standards and the dedication of individuals, artists and craftsmen who design and produce our fine memorials, continue to set LBW apart from many in the monument building industry.
